Marcus is a former youth offender who grew into a journalist. He has served as Chairman of the Journalism Guild as well as Editor in Chief for the San Quentin News, authoring the opinion column Editor’s Desk, as well as covering a broad range of stories, including sporting events inside San Quentin, capturing the competitive interactions between the inside and outside communities. He is also a Criminal and Gang Anonymous graduate under the Renewal of the Natural Self class. He learned Restorative Justice and other forms of community healing from the self-help group Alliance for Change. His goal is to provide healing through words and art.
