Kevin D. Sawyer is a contributing editor for the Prison Journalism Project, a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, and a former associate editor and member of the San Quentin News team that won SPJ’s 2014 James Madison Freedom of Information Award. His work has appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, Oakland Post, Columbia Journalism Review, Harvard Journal of African American Policy and many others. He won a 2019 PEN America Honorable Mention for nonfiction and was a 2016 recipient of The James Aronson Award for Exemplary Community Journalism. Prior to incarceration, Kevin worked in the telecommunications industry for 14 years. He holds a BA degree in mass communication with a special broadcasting option from CSU Hayward and is a trained audio engineer through The Last Mile. In 2023 Kevin was accepted to the Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley. He is currently working on a novel.
